The next generation
Parenting, and indeed all mentoring, involves risk. I believe the risk of not taking kids paddling is far more impactful on their developing minds. PlayStation Pro? Mario Cart 8? Now that’s dangerous stuff.
I paddle from the Spring Equinox to the Winter Solstice, then I let my boats lay fallow for a season. They receive a well-deserved rest, while other activities take up my time.
Don’t neglect your paddles
The paddle is as important as the boat. Paddles are meant to interact with water. Not gravel, not rocks, not concrete. Sure, you hit things with your paddle accidentally. But it pains me to see how some folks abuse their paddles.
Novice, meet River
"River, I'd like to introduce you to my friend, Novice. Novice, this is my old friend, River. By the end of the day, you guys are going to be great friends."
The way of the blade
PADDLING with Darren Bush
There are no right or wrong paddles. If you are a fan of big blades for flatwater paddling, then more power (literally) to you. Do you like skinny little Greenland kayak paddles? By all means, use them. Like a bent shaft canoe paddle or a traditional willow-leaf design? Good for you. As the French say,
à chacun son goût
