The Superiorland Cross Country Ski Club (SSC) recently held its season-end social and awards gathering at Marquette’s Presque Isle Pavilion. The club used the occasion to review the past cross-country skiing season and hand out awards.

The SSC Board presented Sten Fjeldheim, longtime Northern Michigan University cross-country skiing and running coach, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The board felt Fjeldheim deserved the award for leading many strong teams and skiers at NMU and for his furtherance of the local skiing community. Fjeldheim is one of the founding members of the SSC.

Recent Marquette Senior High School graduate Zach Wagner was also named Skier of the Year. Wagner had a very successful 2008-2009 season in which he finished at or near the top of the many races the team competed in around the Midwest, which earned him the men’s overall state high school champion title.

Fjeldheim and Wagner will have their names added to plaques on permanent display at the Noquemanon Trail Network’s Forestville Trailhead facility.

SSC hosts cross-country ski programs for all skiers, from the smallest children to adults. This past winter 120 children took part in Ski Cats, Adventure Club, prep team and/or race team youth programs. Scores of adults also took part in its Monday night skate lessons under a partnership with Down Wind Sports and/or its Wednesday night relays.
