Great Lakes Endurance, the Wisconsin-based organizer of environmentally friendly trail running events, has upgraded one of its established events and added a new event.

Navarino Eco-Marathon & Half Marathon

Replacing a 15K trail run at the Navarino Nature Center near Shiocton, Wisconsin, a full marathon and half marathon will be held April 17, less than a week before Earth Day.

“We added 3.8 miles to the 15K course to create a half marathon loop. The new loop features a scenic ridge, oak savannah and a nice Aspen grove. The marathoners will complete two loops,” race director Jeff Crumbaugh said.

All marathon finishers will receive medallions made by local craftsman John Wilson from sugar maple sourced from the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The top three in each age group for the marathon and half marathon will receive 1-pound blocks of Oak Grove Dairy cheese.

The event will feature an all-local foods cookout, featuring elk and buffalo burgers, cheddar cheese, coleslaw, honey sweetened cranberries, baked beans and cherry juice. All food for the meal will come from farmers and producers within 100 miles of the Navarino Nature Center.

The event will be hosted by the new solar-powered Navarino Nature Center. The green building features a 14.3 kilowatt photovoltaic solar array and is heated and cooled with a geothermal system. The interior is finished with locally harvested oak and maple paneling, and recycled glass tile flooring. Tours of the Navarino Nature Center will also be available throughout the day for those who would like to learn more about solar power and geothermal systems.

Keyes Peak Trail Marathon

Great Lakes Endurance will be adding another trail marathon to its series with the new Keyes Peak Trail Marathon on June 19 in rural Florence County, Wisconsin. The event will be based out of the rustic ski lodge at Keyes Peak and at the base of Keyes Lake.

Crumbaugh has been working with Patrick Smith, who manages the Florence County forest and parks, to set up a single-loop marathon course, starting and finishing at the lodge. Ryan Jacobson, an avid trail runner from Marinette, Wisconsin, and Nathan Ruble, from the Florence County Natural Resources and Interpretive Center, have also been working with Crumbaugh to develop the event.

“The trail system in Florence County is exceptional and mostly undiscovered. This will be one our best courses,” Crumbaugh predicted. “It is all highly runable but with diverse terrain. There are beautiful sections through pine forests and a stream crossing.”

Crumbaugh added, “I’ve run many trails in the upper Great Lakes region, and this ranks with the best.”

Like all Great Lakes Endurance events, the Keyes Peak Trail Marathon will maintain rigorous environmental standards. For more information and registration, visit www.greatlakesendurance.com.
