SELLERS BEWARE
There is always a risk in buying and selling with people you don't know.
A couple readers who have placed Marketplace Ads in Silent Sports recently alerted us to attempted scams on the part of one or more potential buyers.
Silent Sports and many other publications with online classified ads have attracted scam artists. The Federal Trade Commission has described what essentially happens in these
cases: A would-be scammer responds to a classified ad or auction posting, offers to pay for the item with a check, and then comes up with a reason for writing the check for more than the purchase
price. The scammer asks the seller to wire back the difference after depositing the check. The seller does it, and later, when the scammer's check bounces, the seller is left liable for the entire
amount.
If you think you've been targeted by a counterfeit check scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (1-877-FTC-HELP), your local post office or your state or local
consumer protection agencies.
