The Bike for Wisconsin Ride will offer four route options, all of which will include the rest stop at Cederburg's historic covered bridge. The routes include 11 and 16 mostly flat miles, a 30-mile course with rolling hills, and a 62-miles metric century featuring a couple challenging hills.
Riders will start between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the Cedarburg High School main entrance. Riders of the 62-mile course are encouraged to start by 7:30 a.m. SAG service ends and rest stops will close at 2 p.m.
Event organizers will provide maps, well-marked routes, post-ride showers and t-shirts for the first 300 registrants.
The ride coincides with September 16-17 Wine & Harvest Festival in Cedarburg. FEVER RIVER ADVENTURE TRIATHLON RETURNS SEPT. 16

September 16 will mark the second annual Fever River Adventure Triathlon, in Galena, Illinois. This unique, paddle-bike-run event attracted folks from all over the Midwest for the inaugural running last year. About 100 racers are expected to compete this year.
The 2006 race course has undergone some changes intended to minimize obstacles. Last year's course had two transition areas, with the second transition being placed just beyond a railroad crossing. Although no passing trains halted any racers, there was the potential for some to get "unlucky" at that point in the race.
This year there is one transition area with a "clover leaf" type configuration, rather than point to point. Additionally, racers from last year will be pleased to find less extreme grades on the new 17-mile bike route, with the steepest hill coming in at only a 7 percent grade.
The race invites individuals or teams of two or three to compete. Athletes from novice to experienced will compete within one of the two class categories, Standard Class or Elite Class. The Elite Class racers are those using any single person canoe or kayak weighing under 40 pounds, and/or a road or triathlon bike. Standard class racers will be those using heavier kayaks or any bike other than a road or triathlon bike.
Race equipment may be rented from Fever River Outfitters in Galena if reserved in advance.
Fever River Racing is a group of experienced adventure racers from north-western Illinois and Iowa who have come together to promote outdoor experiences and the values of teamwork through racing. The proceeds of the Fever River Adventure Triathlon will be donated to the Special Olympics of Illinois.
For more information or to obtain an application, contact Deb Malone at 815/776-9425 or e-mail feverriver@sbcglobal.net. Register online at www.active.com. Race details and registration forms can be had at www.feverriveroutfitters.com.

BIKES BELONG AWARDS $5,000 TO CAMBA

The Bikes Belong Coalition, based in Boulder, Colorado, recently awarded $5,000 to the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) to help construct the first singletrack in the Hayward Cluster. The new 8-mile trail, the first of three planned singletrack trails in the cluster, will provide an exciting route for mountain bikers and help boost bicycle tourism in northwestern Wisconsin.
Founded in 1993, CAMBA has developed more than 300 miles of mapped and marked mountain bike trails in northwest Wisconsin. Their nationally recognized trail system spans 1,600 square miles and two counties, and is a destination for mountain bikers throughout the upper Midwest.
Bikes Belong is a coalition of bicycle suppliers and retailers working together to put more people on bicycles more often. Through national leadership, grass-roots grants and promotion, the coalition strives to make bicycling safe, convenient and fun.
Since its establishment in 1999, the Bikes Belong grant program has funded 127 projects in 40 states and the District of Columbia, awarding more than $1 million in cash and leveraging more than $450 million in federal, state and private funding. Facilities grants alone have helped finance more than 1,350 miles of bike paths and trails that link more than 5,500 miles of bike trails.

BIRKIE OFFERS $30,000 IN SKIER DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
Applications due October 1

HAYWARD, Wis. – The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) is seeking grant applications for youth ski programs associated with middle and high schools and cross-country ski organizations throughout the country.
"The mission of the foundation is to promote cross-country skiing as a fun, energetic activity that is part of a healthy lifestyle. A significant portion of the effort focuses on young skiers," ABSF Executive Director Ned Zuelsdorff said.
Zuelsdorff said ABSF will award a total of $30,000 in grants with up to $3,000 being awarded to each organization selected. He said grant applications from youth cross-country ski programs throughout the country are welcomed.
Priorities for ABSF funding include, but are not limited to:
• Creation or expansion of young skier programs.
• Purchase of "loaner" ski equipment for participants.
• Purchase of ski hats and uniforms to foster team building and participation.
• Reduction of participant travel costs to ski events and clinics.
• First time applicants.
Zuelsdorff said the grant application procedures have changed, and grant applicants are encouraged to carefully read the grant application guide available at www.birkie.com/information/foundation.html prior to completing the application. Only those projects that fall within the foundation's priorities, participant focus, program areas and ABSF skier-development objectives will be considered for foundation support.
Grant applications are due in the Birkie office by October 1. The ABSF Skier Development Committee will review all applications received and announce award decisions by mid-November. Applications received after October 1 will not be considered for funding in 2006-2007 unless available funding remains.
To contribute to the skier development fund, which is used exclusively for this purpose, call 715/634-5025 or send a check to "ABSF" designating the skier development fund as the desired recipient.
The 34th American Birkebeiner will take place February 22-24, 2007. The Birkie – North America's largest and most prestigious cross-country ski marathon – spans 51 kilometers from Cable to Hayward. The Birkie is one of 14 races in the Worldloppet international circuit and part of the American Ski Marathon series of 14 races. Find out more at www.birkie.com or call 800/USA-BRKE.

NOQUEMANON SKI MARATHON REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
'Touring class' category of skiers new in '07

MARQETTE, Mich. – The ninth annual Subaru Noquemanon Ski Marathon and mBank Half Noque is set for Saturday, January 27, 2007. Printed registration forms are now available for the 51-kilometer marathon and 25-kilometer half marathon. The first registration deadline, prior to a rate increase, is September 30.
The 2006 Subaru Noquemanon Ski Marathon attracted over 1,200 skiers from around the country. Race organizers are looking to surpass that number in 2007. Along with elite racers from teams such as Atomic, Rossignol and the Subaru Factory Team, the event attracts recreational skiers looking to improve on a time from a previous year or just finish the course.
The event is best known for the scenic trail that traverses the beautiful Upper Peninsula wilderness from Ishpeming north and eastward toward Marquette featuring Lake Superior views, a waterfall, granite outcrops and a 1,000-foot descent.
A new offering for the 2007 event will be a touring class for the classic and freestyle marathon and half marathon.
"The touring class is open to skiers who are more interested in a casual skiing experience rather than a competitive race," race director Jon Mommaerts said. "These skiers will be allowed to begin prior to their respective competitive ski races. Although they are not eligible for the overall awards, they are still eligible for age class awards. We will be allowing only 40 skiers per touring class."
Also new for this year is the renaming of the half marathon as the mBank Half Noque. Susan Brian, sponsor chairwoman of the Noque, welcomes mBank, "We are so pleased that mBank has come on as the naming sponsor of the half marathon. With their commitment to the race and cross-country skiing, we wanted to provide them with the naming rights of the 25K event."
Jack Frost, senior vice president of mBank said, "mBank is excited about our new sponsorship of the Half Noque Ski Marathon. We value the opportunity to support the ski race and give back to the community and our clients."
The Subaru Noquemanon Ski Marathon is a member of the prestigious American Ski Marathon Series and the FIS North American Cup Series.
Registration forms can be found at local sports shops or by calling the Lake Superior Community Partnership offices in Marquette and Ishpeming at 888/578-6489.

DOCUMENTARY FILMED AT 2005 CHICAGTO MARATHON MAY BE SCREENED AT '07 EXPOS

The 2005 La Salle Bank Chicago Marathon will feature prominently in a full-length documentary about marathoning due out in 2007.
"Land of the Gods: The Legend of the Marathon" follows two elite runners – including Olympic bronze medalist Deena Kastor, who won the women's race in Chicago last year – and three amateurs as they train for and completed the event last October. The citizen racers are two women who ran Chicago as their first marathon and a male masters runner with four marathons under his belt.
Trailers for the film show sweeping arial views of the tens of thousands of runners and the Chicago skyline.
The fim will include interviews with marathoning greats Dick Beardsley, Amby Burfoot, Jeff Galloway, Jacqueline Hansen, Joe Henderson, Khalid Khannouchi, Kenny Moore, Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, Kathrine Switzer and Grete Waitz.
The history of the marathon recounted in the film will include highlights from "the Duel in the Sun" between Minnesota's Dick Beardsley and Alberto Salazar at the 1982 Boston Marathon.
Three-time Academy Award winner Mark Jonathan Harris is the executive producer for the film and marathon runner Jon Dunham is the director.
"We are currently editing 'Land of the Gods' and aiming for a 2007 world premiere," Dunham told Silent Sports in July. Dunham said the film will not be released this summer as stated on the website of the film company, Calico 1880.
"Land of the Gods" will be submitted to film festivals and possibly screened at big city marathon expos in Chicago, Berlin, Boston, New York and London.
"At these screenings, marathoners along with their friends and family members will have a chance to relax and become inspired in the days leading up to their own 26.2-mile challenge," according to a press release from the film company.
Because more than 1 million people enter marathons every year and there are more than 24 million runners in the United States alone, the filmmakers believe there is "a very large built-in audience for this film."
For more information and to view trailers of the film, go to www.calico1880.com.
